Being an engineer can be very difficult, but there are also many advantages afforded to those that have this career. One major benefit is that most engineers get a high salary. Other advantages include the ability to travel, and being able to solve global issues. Here are the five biggest reasons to become an engineer.

Global Problems

If you want to make a change in the world, then being an engineer is one of the best ways. Engineers frequently have to build things that are used to better a state, nation or the entire world. For example, engineers are often tasked with finding ways to solve or lessen world hunger.

While all of your projects will not be on a global scale, you can expect even the smaller jobs to help at least a small amount of people. Virtually all of the new technology made to clean water, improve farming practices and everything else to help the world is made by engineers.

Frequent Travel

Some people see this as a disadvantage, but others see the good side of frequent traveling when being an engineer. Engineering is a global affair. Every state and nation needs engineers to build things. You may be tasked with traveling to other countries for jobs. This allows you to see new sights, and you can have a lot of fun in these new places when work is done.

If the job is going to last a long time, then companies will usually help the engineer find housing. Companies will also assist with moving the whole family to make things easier.

Early Work

Many of the more advanced jobs, such as being a scientist, require advanced degrees. This causes students to be stuck in school another two to four years before they can actually see the fruits of their labors. This isn’t the case for engineers.

Engineers can frequently get work with a four-year degree. While there may be some jobs that require advanced degrees, you can work while getting your advanced degree at the same time. Engineers also tend to get promotions faster than other careers, and this can give you a better salary. Speaking of salary, most engineering positions commonly appear in the top 10 lists for highest paid careers.

Lack of Unemployment

Engineers are needed in just about every industry. Because of this, unemployment for engineers is basically nonexistent. Engineers are not only useful, but they have a full range of skills that most businesses need.

For example, engineers commonly exhibit teamwork skills, scientific understanding, creativity and problem-solving skills. Businesses are constantly looking for people with these skills, so it is very rare for an engineer to be unemployed. Even those that do lose their jobs, from being fired or any other reason, should have no problem finding a new one.

There are few jobs that can really be considered free from the recession, but an engineering career is one of them. If you like job security, then get a career as an engineer.

Few people like being watched while they work. It can feel irritating, and it often interferes with one’s performance. Most engineers enjoy autonomy while on the job. There are several reasons for this.

Most people do not possess engineering skills, so having a manager without engineering skills watching over you wouldn’t make any sense. Another reason is because an engineer is expected to be competent enough to complete the task without major supervision.

New engineers may be a little more closely supervised than others, but this often stops when new engineers prove themselves. If you do not like the idea of someone holding your hand and watching you all day, then this career can be very good for you.
